I drove my 90 300zx 2+2 to work and it cut off right when I was going to park it. It was losing power off and on during the drive. I tried to get a jump the next morning an the guy put 24v to it and had my battery leaking after the first time I tried to start it. I was thinking that the PTU was bad as I have had this one time before. I replace the PTU unit yesterday but now the car just goes Click when you turn the key? Do you think that the starter is gone now since the guy put 24v to it? I only tried to start it one time and notice that it was turning over to fast. Any ideas as to checking the starter without taken it off?

Have you tried a different battery? That would be the first thing I would try. If it starts with a fresh battery, I'd be concerned about the alternator. When the alternator fails, you're driving on battery power alone. As the battery slowly discharges, then everything else slowly dies.

That said, the 24V may have fried the PTU as well. However, if the PTU fails, the car will still turnover, it just won't spark and thus won't start.

How did he put 24V to it?

He was giving me a jump on a mobile equipment cart that is powered by 24v. I bought a new PTU and tried to jump the car with a new 12V battery and the starter went click. I plan to tow the car home today from work and have more room and check out the starter. I just had the car running the other day and took the battery post off and the car keep running but the alternator could have just went out. Do you know of any way to check the PTU unit out to see if its bad?

The online service manual should have PTU test procedures: http://www.300zx-twinturbo.com/cgi-bin/manual.cgi

My money is on a bad alternator as that is how things would go if it was bad, and a bad starter relay perhaps from the extra voltage. Test everything and you should find the fault- replace/repair and you're good to go!

You can tap on the started while having someone turn the key. Unless it's completely fried and shot you might get lucky and get it to crank. If it does due to the tapping then it's your starter. I wouldn't bank on the alternator alone though. The alternator does not aid in starting the car but rather keeps it running. If you determine the starter is bad, once replaced, you can unplug the battery while the car is running. If it stays on your alt is likely ok however if it shuts off, it's bad and the reason for it shutting down on your way to work. If so, what probably happened was that it quit and forced the car to run on the battery alone. When the battery quit it dumped you mid route. Good luck.
