How to tell if maf is bad?

I need to know how I can tell if my maf is bad I had it unplug and the car idled smoother than usual as soon as i plugged it back in the horrible idle came back is this normal Im currently trying to work out some other issues so ruling this one out will be great thanks!

Connect a voltmeter to the output of the AFM plug, measure the voltage of the AFM with engine not running (let us know what you find), then blow through the afm (with the engine not running) and let us know what you find. Do this and I can better advise you. Or better yet, you know how to catch me when ready. ;)
