I just got replacement shifter bushing and am trying to take the ****er off. I got to the shifter plates. I got the four middle and rear screws off. But two front ones are inaccessible from cabin. So I lifted the car and tried to take them off from the drive shaft tunnel. But the space inside the drive shaft tunnel was so tight that even that small 12mm open end wrench could not move much.

I was thinking about drilling holes through the driveshaft tunnel but that could permanently damaged the shassis' stiffness so decided not to do that. So, without taking the whole transmission down, is there any special method and tools for this job?

I can get to mine from the interior (with a small ratcheting wrench) or the underside (but it takes some contortions).

Its a little hard but you can get to them from the inside of the car, and it is slightly easier to get to them from underneath, but as Azhitman said, it helps to be flexible.

definitely go at them from the inside of the cabin with a ratcheting wrench. When putting the plate back on, put the bolts through the holes and carefully move it into place and go from there.

Take the stick out if you haven't already, there should be a short shifter install with that info around somewhere. I used a small baby rachet that my son's tool box came with... go figure.

when i installed my B&M, i lifted the car and since none of my rachets fit, i just used a wrench and took it off. took me a good 30mins-hr just for those 2 bolts.

i used a short rachet wrench, worked fine. a rachet w/ a swivel socket would work too
