So my rear brake lights don't turn on when I press the break pedal but I know the lights themselves work. But how do I take out the Brake light switch?

Also what does the switch next to the brake light switch do?
Would I have to replace that one also to make the rear brake lights work when needed?

The switch next to the brake light switch is the cruise cancel switch. If it's operating normally, there's no need to change it.

See page BR-14 of the FSM for an exploded parts diagram of the brake pedal. I guess there's a bolt head inside the square switch portion? I don't know, I've never replaced the brake switch.

I cant see the link you posted but thanks and I got the switch out. Can you tell me the part number for it? I called auto zone and they said they had the part and by the time I got home and compared it to the one from the car, I realized they gave me the wrong part  So this time I want to be a bit more specific......

AutoZone doesn't seem to have a direct-fit replacement. Buy this part from your local dealer instead.

Sorry for the late response but I figured out my problem. I acidently took out the switch for the cruise control which is right next to the break light switch. So that was why I couldn't find the right part. But the break light switch was still broken. I ended up going to the dealership and buying a switch for around $15

My brake lights work fine but when in auto mode at night, my headlights turn on but my taillights do not. When I set my lights on manual on mode, my tailights work fine. Could this be related in any way?

Not sure. When I went to the dealership the mechanic said that 9/10 times when the brake light dont turn on when you press the breaks, it is most likely the switch. So try changing switch to see if that helps.

See EL-46 of the FSM - "When outside is dark, headlamp turns on but tail lamp does not turn on by auto light operation." Looks like you'll have a fun time sticking your head in the driver footwell measuring voltages.

The brake light switches rubber grommet disinterested after 18 years and 280k miles on my Qx4, I found the pieces in the steeringcolumn bracket. . The whole idea is to keep the"button" depressed. A bottle cap sufficed, and chewing gum kept in place.

Brake lights were staying on. Google research implicated brake light switch. However, it's endemic with this model for The rubber grommet to disintegrate, I soon learned. The whole idea is to engage the bnrake light switch "button" when depressed. A bottle cap sufficed, and chewing gum kept in place. An easy fix for a tight working space.
