How to retrieve ECU code without usiing OBD scanner?

I have 2001 Pathfinder. Can anybody tell me how to retrieve CEL / SES code by self-diagnostic without using scanner? I have 97 Maxima, and I can retrieve codes by turning a small screw on ECU, and code can be retrieved by counting the light pattern. Is there anyway to do this for Pathy?Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure 1999 was the last year that Nissan used the screw diode method with the blinking light. After that your only option is a scan tool to retrieve codes.
