Which odometer? One of the trip odometers, or the main one? It's a federal crime to tamper with a car's odometer (unless you're talking about trip odometers), even if it's to make it more accurate (for instance, if you're swapping in a different cluster). Even ignoring the legality issues, with the Maxima's digital odometer, I'm not sure it's even possible without diving into the ECU.

As for the computer, what you're looking for is an OBDII scanner. Autoparts stores sell them, but you can also find them online. Google/ebay etc. should turn up lots of options.

i wouldnt tamper with it. if you want to resell your vehicle, its gonna get you into loads of trouble. carfax and other companies can look you your service records and if it is higher than your current mileage then you tampered it and it will make you and your vehicle worthless.

now if the odometer is broken... whole different story. go to the dealership and pay some $$$ and they will probably put in a new one for you and set it to the correct mileage.
