I just made 2 costly repairs to my 99 Nissan maxima in the last month and would love to save a little money on this one. I would like to know specifically how to replace my starter. The mechanic quoted me $340......I see that I can get the part for $130...is this something a person of general intelligence and basic tools can do themselves in teh driveway on a Sunday afternoon? Thanks!

Welcome to NICO.

Replacing the starter is one of the easier jobs on the Maxima.

The starter is located on the top of the transmission bell housing. You'll need to remove some of the intake piping to gain access to the starter. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery. Then remove the wires from the back of the starter. There are two bolts that hold the starter in place (I believe 14 or 17mm). Remove those bolts, and pull the old starter out. You should put some sort of high-temp lithium grease on the new starter where the gear slides in and out to prevent it from binding (just in case measure). Put the new starter in, and tighten the bolts. Reconnect the wires to the starter and battery. Then reinstall the intake piping.

Thank you so much! That is great news - exactly the details I needed!
