Hi, my 1994 Q45 the battery cable (red part http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors..._1214 in this picture below) is acting up due to looseness and/or dirtiness, I have to clean it once it awhile or else the car won't start and will dies in the middle of driving afetr some bumpy ride.

I am tired of having to maintenance it and was wondering If I may replace it with a standard termina or just soak it in soda or gum cleanser?

Hard to believe that a car this electric came stock with such cheesy connectors. But I suppose they have to cut costs wherever possible.

They do the job and have been doing it for 14+ years, Maybe with some cleaning and basic battery maintenance they would have lasted longer.

I will be the first to admit I am not crazy on maintenance, I may have a ton of knowledge about the Q45 (Or at least I feel I do). But if you keep things clean they will last longer right?

Corroded battery terminals are not a good thing. Cleaning them is about as high tech as brushing your teeth.

Baking soda and water are your friends when cleaning battery terminals. Applying dielectric grease to the terminals after everything's connected will help prevent more acid buildup.

My Maxima's positive battery terminal was very prone to acid buildup for some reason. Eventually it rotted back into the cable itself, out of sight. One day the car just wouldn't start. When I removed the cable clamp it fell completely apart due to the rot. Make sure if you're having intermittent starting issues that you're not looking at this happening to you down the road.

Battery cable clamps only build up crud IF the battery is defective and leaking acidic gas around its terminals{broken seal}......the entire problem STARTS with a bad battery, not clamps!!!!!!

I have found those treated felt rings that fit over the battery terminal and under the clamp to be an excellent investment. They are available at parts stores by the batteries... amazingly cheap insurance at less than $1 a pair.

I think the dealer charged me $800 to replace the positive cable on my 1990 a couple of years ago. Probably more now.
