Maxnix is going to be removing his wood trim from his Q soon, and suggested I post this here as well for others that may want to remove their stick dash kit.

To REMOVE the old dash kit, it would hellp to heat up the pieces with a hairdryer before you pull. This will make them less brittle when you pull them off. Take your time when prying it off. There will be some adheasive residue leftover that comes off easily if you rub it with your thumb. It will probably take you about an hour to remove the old kit. You just have to be very careful and remove small sections at a time. You can also use 3M adhesive cleaner. It will not affect the Oak or Gray areas, but does dissolve the black color, so you have to be careful to only apply it to areas you know you will recover with a new trim. Then you want to go over everything with the isoproply alcohol. Then put on the new adheasive promoter included in the new dash kit.

Hopes this helps.

I do have dash kits for cars that already have factory wood, with extra pieces that match the stock wood, and full blown kits for models without wood, as well as real carbon fiber.

I wanted to get rid of my kit in favor of the plain dash but decided not to as I could not get all the residue from the two sided tape off. I tested the removal on the lower left dash section (cruise control switch area). No luck.

I used the 3M adhesive remover, too. I think it simply has been on to long. If also recall (but I will have to verify) the foam had a slight 'memory' and one could easily note an indentation where the tape used to be.

Jason. You seem to know a lot about the interior wood. Can you suggest the best way to clean them and maintain the original luster on a 97 J30 sedan? Thanks. Take care.

Pledge™ furniture polish, or a light coat of any carwax. I like Meguiar's. :)

That's absolutely correct. On "Q2" The prior owner had a cell phone holder attached to the trim panel that surrounds the radio and climate controls. I removed that peice about three months ago, and there's still an indent there. Maybe warming it with a hair dryer will work... I'll have to try that the next time the Chick is in town - I never have more hair to dry than a good cotton towel can't handle :)

Jason,

Does this apply to wood kits too? I've got a full wood kit that I bought from you a couple of years ago on the J.

Thanks, Jason. Did remove my top part as it was releasing anyway, but some adhesive still remains aroung the intrument illumination control. Tried isopropyl, acetone, amyl acetate, perchloroethylene, water,....still remains hard and attached. Any ideas?

heat with hairdryer, work a piece of waxed dental floss between paint and emblem in a sawing motion to cut through adhesive-use wd-40 or other solvent to remove traces left on paint when complete.

Can't have my logos until you pry my cold, dead fingers off the steering wheel. One of the rarest and one of the best sedans ever made.

Unknowning people should know what just showed them the way.

oh I hear you on that, ill be keeping the emblem. But I always thought with it off it would flow better in my eyes. I have alot of people ask what kind of car it is anyway, i dont want to remove it to think i have some kind of unknown car. It was all just in the asthetic view for me. But its just my opinion. Ill post a before and after pic, then you can tell me how retarded it looks, lol ps thx for the removal info

I don't think it will look retarded, it will just keep people in the dark about what just showed them what a luxury performance sedan should do. Too many people already don't know what a Q45 is.

And I do like the lettering font.

Try using "Tea Tree Oil" to soften adheasive. It's a natural product available from the pharmacy. Put some on a rag, rub it on unwanted adhiesive, let it do it's job for about 5 min. and the adhiesive should be soft enough to rubb of easily. Don't forget to wash it off with clean soapy water. I've tried it on contact cement & it works fine.

Another product I've used is " Eucalyptus Oil" they come in little 50-100ml bottles. They are an antisepic normaly used for the management of minor scratches to fungal infections. My grandmother told me about it years ago!!. The label tells me that the active ingredient of the Tea Tree Oil is ..essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia and its water soluble.

Hope that helps you track it down.Greg

Try "Goobegone" It is a cleaner that you can get at the grocery store. I have had great luck with removing tape residue and adhesives with this stuff. It is citrus based and does not seem to harm the underlying surfaces or colors . . . worth a try!

A similarly-named product in the US called "Goo Gone" (can be found at home Depot and Orchard Supply for example) might do the trick too. It is "citrus based" too (whatever the heck that means) and works wonders on lots of stuff.

I would check on an unobtrusive paint location to make sure it does not affect the paint. I have used it before on my wife's Acura and it was fine, but no harm in checking on the Infiniti!
