how the hell do you get the valve springs out of these motors? the valve spring compressors at the local auto stores arent made for cam over bucket motors, and the home made compressor my buddy made for his cam-over bucket saturn doesnt go deep enough for my head. i need to get it apart to replace my seals. thanks in advance!

Take a 1/2in drive socket that goes around the valve stem and keepers but rests on the retainers, then put about a 4-5 in. extension and a 5 pound heammer. Place a rag or shop towel under the valve being removed and give it a damn har wack!!!

Dont post up saying thats gunna break **** because it won't, even though your "pro engine builder" friend said not to.

Or pay a shop for an hour of labor to do the exact same thing I just posted.

Heres this from an earlier part of my build. Hope this helps with what you need.

Removed all caps.

Remvoved camshaft.

A really high detailed look at the lifters. Everything looks pretty good as far as visuals go.

A look at the camshaft's lobes and journal areas.

Now this is the type of compressor i bought but i was not right and bought it anyways just to find out the ca18det has its spring, retainer, keeper assembly in a bore. It is not exposed like on some other engines.

Now this is the correct type. Bought it on Ebay from a tool warehouse in cleveland ohio. http://www.USAtoolwarehouse.com OTC and very inexpensive so i was happy. Recommended!

The little pieces that make it work! Keep things in check, inorder, and know what goes where. Important!

All the hardware. Looking nice and sweet after i clean off some of the oil.

Valve guides, seats, and seals i believe are whats left. This is what the machine shop will continue off from.

David, I think he's trying to do it with the head still on the car.

If that's true, you may have to go buy the little tool from Nissan, or make one.

I've got the same tool David does. It works great but you've got to have the head off of the car.

Oh snap. I didnt realize that. In that case then you would have to seek out the Nissan tool or something similar to it, which i have seen.

Why not just take the head off? Maybe you can have other things done to it also like port or valve job?

IF your head is still on this is the one you want.

You bolt the legs onto where the cam journals thing. Insert the rod, put handle on rod and push down on valve.

have fun with the head on the motor, and try not dropping the valve into the cylinder. I don't reccomend doing it this was, but they do make a "tool" which is a hose that screws into the spark plug hole, and you can attach the other end to an air compressor. The air keeps the valves from falling.

Or if you've got a Craftsman Compression tester like I do, the hose that comes with it works exactly like this. One end threads into the head through the spark plug and the other end is a regular air hose quick disconnect.

You don't have to pull the fuel rail, intake, exhaust, and get new gaskets for everything.

Hey the_chosen_one that would be the one i saw! Thats the sucker youd use to take that thing apart while the head is still on.

Good point about "pulling the fuel rail, intake, exhaust, and get new gaskets for everything." But id probably take the head off anyways. I mean, youre right there, why not! You'll feel better later that you did if you do have the head machined, ported, cleaned, etc.
