Sup everyone! Like I said, im was in the process of making a write up on covering up all that nasty rust in the back of MOST of our verts.

It makes it alot easy w/ the top down as you can see =)A quick shot of that nasty rust in the back Alittle close up

Heres the metal sand paper i used. pretty good. ALSO when sanding it'd be a good idea to keep some sort of vaccum to suck up all the dust that accumulates after sanding. This is the paint i used. The guy at Home Depot said this brush on stuff is "better" than the spray on rust remover/cover. Its just supposed to prevent rust from coming back. We'll see about that hahaI covered the pillars just in case, just one side though The bottom also I sanded the best i could I actually forgot to take a picture but i was already half way done After i finished the whole part i stopped. I might save the other parts for another day Heres just a pic of it almost dried up

thats about it for now! thanks for reading questions/comments/flames just pm me

edit: btw this all cost me about 10-15 bucks.

Nice work!!! Thanks for taking the time to do a nice write up on it. Can you put in a little more detail about the sanding and the steps in-between... You've got awesome start and finish info... just need a little of the process in between. If you can do that... we'll make this an article... and you'll get a custom title! Once again... Nice work!!!

NICE JOB!

how long did the whole project take?

how long does it take to dry? how many coats applied?

does it dry evenly (i.e. can't see brush strokes) or, well... not evenly? hahah.

THANKS!

use a wirebrush instead of sandpaper, its easier to get the rust out of the cracks, gaps, and curves. If the rust is left anywhere it will continue to rust. Its ok to use sandpaper on the long flat surfaces afterwards to try and get it to look smooth again, if after using the wirebrush to remove rust the surface is left pitted. Soak a rag in "prep all" or a similar grease remover, wipe down the area, then use a clean rag to wipe it again. I agree using brush on product is better for rust prevention, but you should use a rust remover (most come in jelly form) first to remove the large patches of rust. Like I said, any rust left will continue to rust. After this your product may require you to wirebrush again to get the rust that has been removed off. If so, use prep all again and wipe down the surface. If not, allow it to dry according to package instructions before continuing. Next I use a brush on rust convertor (be sure to stir it until its creamy and has no liquid on top or it will not apply correctly). Once this dries, then you should use a top coat. Rustoleum brand paint is pretty good stuff. If you apply it correctly it will 'self level' and you won't be able to see the brush strokes. If you dont care how it looks then spray on underbody coating is a good rust preventative as well. smells bad though.

Thanks for the write up. I'll tell you what. Close the top, remove interior panels in back seat area and remove so called top well cover. It's leather like cover that's under the top when you drop it. It's glued on to the metal supports in the back seat area. Get a flashlight, open up and look inside. You will see rust even worse than the area that you just fixed. Area is very curvy, tight and wrires are running through, so clean up will be a nightmare. I couldn't get a good shot because of top well cover got in the way, so don't have pictures. That's why I'm thinking about doing it when I replace the top.

I really like the picture when the paint dried up. Looks stock enough. That's exactly what I'm planning on when I do the whole back seat area. Thanks for finding nice paint and tips. What's the exact name of the paint? I can see that it's something ENAMEL from Rustoleum.

Did you buff your car? Looks shiny!!
