Before I'm flamed I did search and found some helpful links but I'm still not 100% I'm looking for the easiest way to remove my KA24DE head with the motor in the car.

What I'm thinking is unbolt the intake manifold from the collector and take off the exhaust header and the pull it straight off. That is of course after I unbolt the head studs. Is there an easier way or any advise you could give me?

check out your factory service manual. I just got done pulling the head from my KA and it's fairly straight forward even if you don't know what you're doing.

PS feel free to check out my thread...no instructions but pictures may help some.

Take off intake/exhaust manifold, take off valvecover, set cylinder 1 to TDC on compression stroke (check out JWT's tech sections to figure out how if you don't know) take off cam sprockets (need a 24 socket with breaker bar) take off cams, remove timing cover, remove head studs (need 10mm allen socket) and voila, you're done.

It sounds easy but plan for 6 to 8 hours of solid work for your first time.

Thanks for the reply scooby. I've removed the intake manifold before and trust me I know first hand what a PITA it is. Like you I too will be get ridding of the emissions stuff. In my state with it being a 95 it is 0 problems come inspection time. I've also changed the timing chain before. Just to give you an idea where I'm at experience wise working on ka24de's.

I'm just trying to get around removing the intake manifold and just pull it with the head. So if I unbolt it off the collector and hack sawed the egr pipe thingy that goes from the exhaust to the intake manifold from behind the engine would it just come right up? Or do I have to remove the intake manifold. I can do it but it would make my day to not have to.

Thanks Anthony

No you definately can take it off with the intake manifold still on. Just make sure the brackets at the base of the manifold are loose, the EGR pipe is free and all the lines to the intake/emmissions/block are free.

That's what I needed to know. I couldn't remember if the top of intake manifold was just bolted to the head or not. That'll bump the job up an hour or 2. Unbolting I'll go...

Thanks

I removed the head by just unbolting the bolts to the collector and cutting a few hoses and pulled the head with the intake manifold on it.. By far it is easier than taking off the whole intake manifold. I post some pics later. It saved me a good 2 hours atleast.
