I've been trying to get this thing out, but failed. I can pull it up, but I can see there's a small plastic clip with 2 wires attached at the bottom. What should I do? I don't want to breal or cut anything at this point.

All I remember is pulling off the surround, unbolting the four bolts and lifting the unit up and remove the C clamp on the linkage.

Or are you talking about just the main release button? Or O/D button? never tried removing one of those.

Or you trying to just remove the actual handle? Never attemted that either and if so, why? If it needs to be replaced, probably easier to do the whole assembly.

I'm in the middle of 5 speed swap right now. Problem is... when I got the car, I replaced P-R-D-1-2 indicator trim. It means somehow I managed to pull the shift knob out and replaced the trim, but I don't remember how I did it. It was about 10 years ago. Anyway, I just want to pull the knob out without breaking anything.

once you undo the four bolts that hold it to the chassis... it should come out as one piece... disconnect the linkage and connections and viola`... it should just come out as one piece .. hope that helps ya..

ya had to do it....lol.. now i had to see if i could take just the top ... lol.. well you have to undo the plastic clip from the shifter assembly (squeeze tabs and pull type). The wires are attached to the switches... or you could unsolder the wires from knob base and do it that way... you have to undo the switches and pull them through the PRND cover otherwise... not sure if it helps ya... but took mine apart.. so those pics i posted a minute ago.. well... no longer quite accurate..lol

Yup! This is exactly what I needed. Yes, I'm sure I did that before when I replaced shifter indicator trim, but I just couldn't do it this time. I'll try it again tonight. Thanks!!

Please help!!!I was playing with auto shifter, and now I can't take out my key. It looks like there's some locking mechanism associated with auto shifter. I can't turn all the way, so I can't use that little button to take it out. What should I do?

Do you have your battery disconnected? If so, reconnect so that you get power.

You can't remove the key w/out power for some reason.

It's connected. Yes, I know what you mean. There's this click sound that releases the key, and somehow I don't hear it anymore.

did you try the shift lock button on the back of the auto shifter. I wonder if by messing around with the shifter a bunch perhaps you don't have it in park properly. You can't pull the key w.out having it in park. Perhaps if you play press the shift lock button you can get it to properly shift into park?

I'm grasping at straws here. I wish I were there to try to help out.

Yes, that was it. I removed 2 small screws behind the shift knob and shift went lower than usual. That way, shift lock button was not engaing properly. I put one screw back on and it worked. To put it on, I had to lift the shift a little bit to align the holes. Oh, well. It was easy one. I'm sure I won't have that problem once I swap to 5 speed. Right?
