How To Properly Test for Spark ?

do any of you guys know? what i did was just unscrew a spark plug and left it in the plug boot. then i had someone crank the engine while i held the plug to the engine. - no spark

then, i took the spark out of the boot, and exposed the metal part of the plug wire that snaps onto the spark plug. then, i held that metal part of the plug wire real close to the engine block to see if a spark jumped between the two. - no spark

am i doing this right?
