How to prevent "BACK FIRING"?

My car backfires sometimes on first and second gear and usaully happens when i shift to the next gear. What could be the problem and what can i do? Thanks guys

MODS:3' catback exhaust if that helps.

its running rich, plus the exhaust doesnt "hide" the backfiring like the stock system.

if you really want to hear somthing, listen to race cars when they shift.

only in first and second? could be a bad diverter valve...

its no bigie, my car backfires all the time. car is fine, just to much exhuast on a stock motor

Backfire is perfectly natural on all engines. You just don't hear it with the stock exhaust, but it happens... I think it sounds cool anyway.
