I used a dremel for most of it. and then use a flathead screwdriver. You should be carefull w/the dremel, Im not totaly sure that the best tool.

I'm pritty sure you need it, other wize it woulnt be there. But you should not be hammering it. You might have the wrong one. When I did my clutch and puti my piolt bareing back in alls I had to do was tap it in, it was easy as cherry pie.

are you installing this as part of an auto-to-manual swap? on my auto CA, there was a pilot converter in the way that has a smaller inner diameter than the crank. I couldn't get my pilot bushing in until I pulled the converter off. Not sure if the KA is the same way.

Here is what I do....

To remove: Pack the hole for the pilot bushing full of grease then take a wooden dowel rod slightly smaller in diameter. Tap on the dowel and the grease should force the bushing out. If not then move on to the dremel. :)

To install: Just use a socket of same diameter to tap it into place. It shouldn't require that much force.

ok heres the problem. I actually cracked the pilot bearing while trying to get it in. Then i went to auto zone and i believe the 89 maxima would be the same as the s13 sr right? Well the thing was it was exactly the same size as the pilot bearing i got from exedy. Are automatic sr's different than manual sr's crankshaft???? I tried to sand the pilot bearing down to make it fit but so far it has been unsuccessful. Anyone have better ideas??!?!?

thanks

dude id buy the right one, even if it means u have to wait a few days. i had the wrong one in and i got a terrible hum that i could actually feel through the stick shift. auto-zone has a pilot bushing remover. what i did to put the new one in was use a craftsmen flat head screw driver. turn that sucker around so the handle is on the pilot bushing and start to hammer the flat head side. use a screw driver that is a little bit bigger than the bushing. i did it this way bc i didnt want to scar the pilot bushing up when i put it in.

hope u understand it.

I did my clutch this weekend and I had a b**** of a time getting the bushing out. I tried the grease method and it did not work at all. I had to use a hacksaw blade and cut a piece of the bushing out then used a screwdriver to pry the rest of it out. It showed quite a bit of wear as compared to the replacement so I think that there was not enough surface area present for the grease removal method to work. When I tried to put the replacement in it was super tight and I had it in halfway when I saw that I was starting to maul the end of it. I took it out and slid it on a pencil and used a bench grinder to remove a little of the outside surface. It didn't take much and when I installed it it still fit snug.Don't have any wierd vibrations or noises.

P.S. they are all the same size and both the ACT and Exedy are for s13 sr's. The autozone one is for 89 maxima. They are all exactly the same size as one another

Just sand down the bushing a little. It will work fine and you won't have any drivability problems.I did it to mine because I had the same sort of fitment issues as your having.

you should be able to take a dowel of some sort, that fits inside the bushing, and has a lip to hold it, then tap it into place its kind of a press fit thats why it doesnt just slide in

Sorry Eternal_240sx, i don't mean to steal your postbut I have a quick question about the pilot bearing. Can the pilot bushing be installed to far in? When putting the trans back in I had a hell of a time getting it to go in the bushing but after like an hour of pushing it finally went in, at that point i thought the trans might have pushed the bushing too far back thus not resting in the bushing. So now I hear this rubbing noise during low RPM. Is this possible?
