I forget the thread name... but it was something like, "factory air-box 101". There is a pictorial walk through on how to cut up the air filter housing to allow all kinds of air-flow. Search for it using the search function... it should come up... and it's damn funny.
Basically, the best way to do it is with a dremmel rotary tool with a cutter blade. Chop off most of the bottom half of the airbox, remove the y-pipe and (not sure if the early s13 has a resonator box) resonator.
