What Daedalus said... the rubber will be shot.
It doesn't really take that long. I used a rented strut spring compressor - $6 for two days - had it done a few hours.
Just go slow and handle the springs nicely when compressing/compressed. I also used a vice to hold the strut firmly in place when taking them apart and putting them together. Only the rears required a little shove with a crowbar in order to get them in and out once they were unbolted - the fronts practially fell out.
The one tricky/annoying part was making sure you put the strut together so that the angle of the bolts on top when installed makes the angle of the bottom of the strut line up with the lower bolt. I had to take my first strut apart a second time to re-align this.
