I tried checking for ECU codes on my 98 blacktop S13 ECU. There is no screw or anything to change modes, and the red light is constantly on. How do I get codes off of this ecu?

what kind of blacktop ecu do you have?? for example J4..............and on. This would help.

are you sure the screw is not there..not corroded up or something? anyway from the research ive done whenever your ecu's l.e.d. is constantly on while the engine is running then your ecu is bad. basically your l.e.d. staying on while the engine is running is your code for a bad ecu

Incorrect, blacktop ECU's simply do not have the screw. IIRC the MIL (malfunction indicator light ) is detected through the gauge cluster.

ya i believe with any sr ecu you can check the ecu code via the check engine light. why do some blacktop ecu's not have screws and some do? possibly only j4's dont? if they dont have a screw how do you check the codes?

I'll check my ECU designation code when I get home. I don't think it's a J4.

I know that S14 and S15 ECUs don't have screws, so you have to pull codes through a consolt or ODB checker. Could be the same with the S13 ECUs without screws.

Yea I will take some pictures. So i need to use the consult to get codes? How can I wire up the consult plug? Since I have a 90 240sx and a 98 SR, is the consult plug and wiring even compatible? Can I just run wires directly off the ecu for the consult?

Thanks.

I was talking with a friend last night about pulling codes off these ECUs (I have an early blacktop E5 ECU, that's why I can pull mine like a normal S13). The type X got a tuned up ECU so it's different from other S13 ECUs. My friend was saying that there's a tamper proof plug on the side that you can drill out and you can get to a screw in there. I'll clarify a bit more on it when I talk to him some more tonight. I want pics primarily to see the side where the screw and LED would normally be, but try to get some good pics so I can get a better 360 visualization of the case.

You can try to install the consult plug, it is tough to find the proper wiring for the port in an FSM because it shouldnt normally be messed with so they omitted the info. You need to use the TX, RX, and CLK signal IIRC.

Here is a pic of the inside of a J4...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1

i dont think j4 ECUs have the screw. the only blacktops with mode selectors were E5 ECUs

i just decided to wire up the consult and diagnostic wires. i know most SR swappers just skip that part.

my j4 ecu runs pretty well, and i have the regular s13 sr maf. I dont think the sohc maf will work on the j4 ecu.

so pretty much only a blacktop type x ecu would work with the j4 ecu?

the Type X ECus are exclusively J4s.

Can you tell me how you wired up the consolt?

it was just plug and play. if you have a front clip, get the entire harness under the dash and start plugging away like you are supposed to.

well that was pretty idiotic.. i meant a blacktop type x maf

does the type x ecu have any safeguards against overheating? if the ecu senses the coolant temp getting too hot will it protect itself?

the only safeguards i know of is the fans running full cycle and if its because of detonation, the computer will just enrich the mix.

i'm asking this because my car only does this when i'm either low on coolant or am leaking coolant or the car gets too hot...

a few days ago i patched up a few leaks (lower rad hose) and filled it up with coolant and now the problem hasn't happened...i'm still a little scared to drive it on the freeway for the fear the problem will return and i'll be stuck at 40 mph on the freeway...

i have zero vac leaks, boost leaks, and my maf is good. car still has power too....until the problem returns and i can't shift past 2000 rpm...

i feel like i'm driving a ticking time bomb...

its okay. the bomb went off in my car. now it doesnt rev beyond 1K. i have a feeling my IACV or TPS is the culprit...

damn dude that sucks...is it stalling or sputtering? or just bounces off 1k like it's hitting a rev limiter?

i think my problem is finally gone. I did a full coolant flush and replaced my crappy coolant resevoir tank and the car runs beautifully now.

i really think our ecu's have some kind of safeguard against overheating. If the cts senses it's getting too hot the ecu will go into safe mode - in an attempt to save the motor.
