I just changed the back brakes and now my emergency brake lever does not hold the car so I found out there is two ways to adjust the cable; 1. go under the car and adjust it or 2. go inside the car and adjust it from underneath the brake lever so what way is the RIGHT way?

BTW, my car is a 1993 Nissan Maxima.

Brake Section of the FSM. Scroll down a little on the 'contents' until you see 'parking brake control'. Just below that you can click on the word 'adjustment' and it will take you right to it! Good luck.

Either way works, but the adjustment under the car is difficulty to get to as it's above (blocked by) the exhaust. The adjustment on the brake handle is pretty easy to get to, so that's where I'd start.

Interestingly, I've experienced this same issue with my '93. I cannot for the life of me figure out where the e-brake cable tension went. I changed the shoes (not at all the first time) and afterward the e-brake lost all it's force. I had to actually remove length from the cable to get it to bite at all. I can't figure out where the weak point/failure has developed.
