So i bought a 240 about 6 months ago, and i absolutely love the car. But it has become increasingly obvious that the previous owner is a complete idiot. Someone mounted amps above the gas tank and you guessed it, ran a screw into the tank. I guess this gives me a good excuse to replace all the subframe bushings. But since i don't want to pull off the subframe more than i have to, whats the right way to fix a hole in a fuel tank? All the kits i found online seemed to be aimed at sealing the tank. and is there anything else i should do while i'm down there?

Empty, drop, patch, reinstall. Or you can go with a fuel cell.

No fuel cell. I like my easy fueling and 15 gallon capacity. Do the epoxy patches hold up? I just don't want to have to do this again, or worse have some sort of fire because of a leak.

I don't believe you need to mess w/ the subframe. you should just get it welded. pull the pump. undo the two straps around the tank, drop it (make sure its empty) drain if not so. fill it w/ water and bring out the welder. thats the safest way. I tried the liquid seal/plug stuff, gas only pored out slower.

Now i'm confused, i thought it is necessary to pull the subframe to get to the gas tank.

I've worked on a lot of older trucks and to fix holes on those I've drilled the hole just a little bigger, got a lag bolt and a washer, then drenched everything in J B weld and tightened down the bolt. Then put a coat of it over the top. Have never had a problem with the holes since, years later.

I was thinking about getting a new one... But there aren't any 240's in junkyards near where i live and the dealership wants like 500 for a new tank. That money is going towards my coilovers.
