How to fix 240SX HUD problem 2012

**I originally tried to post this on 240sxforums.com, but they have a terrible community building policy where you have to wait 10 days and have 3 posts etc.. I don't have the time.**

No Pics

I've read most the posts around the internet about this issue, most of which are outdated, incorrect, or misleading. I've recently fixed 7 HUD units and really just want to put some accurate information out there to those not looking to spend $$ on a new unit.

The Problem:
-HUD unit works intermittently
-Displays Speed only after warming up
-Display fades during driving
-Unit turns off after driving for a few miles

The Issue:
I've read all sorts of things out there about why this unit goes bad from Nissan using cheap components, to bad capacitors. The actual reason for this malfunction of this unit is its exposure to the elements from where it's located - behind the cluster is bare frame, firewall, with minimum insulation. Exposure to freezing temperatures and extreme heat over years wears the components, especially those on the power board. Keep in mind the components of this unit are finite.

The Fix:
I'll write this in steps so if anyone has a question you can easily refer to the step.

1. Remove the cluster and HUD unit- There are many threads on this, some with pictures and great detail so I wont go over it again. My only comment on this step is to lower the steering column.

2. With HUD unit in hand, begin to unscrew the layers apart. There are three layers, the top one that comes completely off is the power board. The other two are held together with what looks like tape with leads inside.

3. Visually inspect the solder attachments of the all components first. On one of the units I fixed just had a solder that had been badly corroded away. What you're looking for here is a disconnected solder joint or blackened areas on the pcb board. If you find something, there is your fix. If nothing is disconnected or corroded, proceed onward.

4. There is a red ground wire on the back of the unit, if you clip a grounded alligator clip to this you'll easily be able to tell if its a grounding issue. That has been the case for those who change out the stereo. If this is not the solution proceed onward.

4. If your gauge lights work, do not replace the capacitor of the famous nicoclub thread. This capacitor along with the sister capacitor close to it is not easy to replace for a beginner. I've been working on circuit boards for awhile and the angles involved on this job can be really troublesome. Although, if your dash lights do not work then this is the problem. It can be tested by plugging in the cluster and touching the replacement capacitor to the leads. If this is not the case proceed onward.

5. The most common fix is to take apart the unit and melt the solder of each and every one of the components. Let them dry; then dip a q-tip in isopropyl alcohol and clean the board thoroughly. Reconnect the unit without the cluster face on. The cluster face has a red colored screen on it that will unable you to see the lcd's red glow once it warms up. So with it plugged in, you should see the red stripes on the lcd screen, confirming power to the screen. If your screen glows, but shows no number then check that the battery has a full charge. Working on this back and forth will drain a battery below 12v quite fast. If your battery is good to go, then let it glow for a minute or two to let the capacitors charge up. Switch the key completely off and then to ACC again. It's very important that your lights are all off before you switch the key to accessory. The power board can get mixed signals this way.

These are the different ways I've fixed the HUD units I've come across. Melting the solder and establishing that fresh connection has been the most successful. Though, all of this is not permanent because the components will die out eventually. Good luck and please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
