Geodeleo, I have been experimenting a bit with the auto stick vs the computer controlled auto mode and am finding that the Rogue is simply picking a much better 'gear ratio' (for lack of a better term..) when in auto mode than I can pick in manual mode. Why? The manual has six preset gears but the auto is infinitely variable and is gearing down and making the best use of the power and torque. I have a scanguage and I check the load and MPG's in both auto and manual mode at the same spot on the freeway every morning. Our Rogues seem to do best at picking the correct 'gear ratio' when it's above 1800 RPM. Anything less than that and it seems it's "lugging" and I use the paddle shifters to override the transmission. I could just step on the gas more and it will adjust to a higher RPM but I can do it quicker (mostly going uphill from a standing start or when it's a 25MPH or less zone) by using the paddle shifters, and it stays in that gear for several seconds until I am up to the speed I want to be or in the power range that I like.
KenHash: Yes, slide that 'stick' over to the + and - side and you just bump them accordingly. Don't hold the stick (or paddles) as they are spring loaded and once you 'bump' them, they will return to neutral. To keep the gears you select with the paddles or stick, put the stick in manual mode. If you are in auto mode, you can still use the paddles, they override the auto mode for up to 4 seconds and then the transmission returns to auto mode and the Rogue will most likely pick a 'better' gear than the one you are in. I've driven a 350Z with one and my mom had a Prelude back in 2000 that had one. They are great for sports cars or for spirited driving but in my Rogue, I find I don't use the manual mode much (other than testing it out..) unless I am on a hill or in certain conditions where I want the feeling of more power/torque. It's my dog hauler and my cargo vehicle and my commuter vehicle, so no crazy driving for me with my Rogue... Anyway, the Rogue under normal driving does a pretty good job of picking 'the right gear'. You don't have to let off the gas (just like in a standard automatic transmission, you don't let off the gas when you feel the car buck and change 'gears') and if you forget that you are in manaul and come up to a stop sign or red light and are in some gear other than first, it will autmotically pick first gear for you so you don't damage the drivetrain. Find an empty parking lot somewhere with no obstacles and play around with it, I enjoy the benefits of not having to change gears in stop and go traffic (I just stick 'er in auto mode) but can over ride auto with the paddles on big hills or when I want some passing power. I think it's the best of both worlds! To remember what does what: "Stick in auto" keeps transmission in auto but you can use the paddles to quickly over ride for several seconds, then it goes to a gear it likes. "Stick in manual" and you can use the stick and/or paddles to change gears and stay in those gears. The "-" will make you downshift (say you are in fifth, you hit the minus, you go to fourth..so you are always going to a smaller gear) and you hit the plus, you go up (say you are in fourth and you hit the plus, you go from fourth to fifth). That's an easy way to remember it. "Plus" to go UP, and "minus" to go DOWN. Just like in math class. Send me an email if you have any other questions or concerns, I don't mind helping! There are never a 'dumb' questions, but there are people that are afraid to ask! We should always reward curiousity with the best of our knowledge. ~Mark
