so i have the problem where my Z's oem alarm will go off at random times when it is parked. I did a search in the z32 threads and most of the people said to just unplug the factory alarm next to the ECU. so i did that, then later when i needed to make a quick errand, i realized my power steering went out. wasnt sure if it was because of me unplugging the factory alarm or not. so i plugged in the alarm again and viola the power steering came back on. so my question is, is there a way to take off the factor alarm, and only the alarm? im thinking about just unplugging the "theft" fuse and see if that does anything. has anyone have any experience with this? i havent tried taking out the fuse block yet because i daily my Z and itll be problematic if something goes wrong while im out. thanks in advance =]

Never heard of that happening, you unplugged the factory alarm module right? It's above the ECU, hidden sort of.

Did the HICAS light illuminate? Or any warning lights for that matter?

the general layout of that picture looks a bit different from my own but the units are still there. im not sure if that layout is specific to a certain model but i have a USDM 2+2 and i unplugged the box that was to the right of the ECU. i dont have any of the black and brown sockets in that location and i unplugged that white, downward facing socket coming out from the small box. but from your reply, it seems that the alarm should be above the ecu, not to the right of. and since i drive a N/A, i have the luxury of not having hicas =]

The unit you've removed it is not the alarm - the alarm unit is on the top right of the ECU behind a metal brachet - just remove the 2 screws and you can remove it.
I removed the OEM alarm and replaced it with an aftermarket one using the same OEM alarm connector and this didn't impact the poser steering.

I think the box you mentioned as alarm it is the power steering unit. Jut plug it back and remove the alarm one.

I'm having the same issue. My alarm was going off at random times so I just decided to take it out. I'm positive I removed the Alarm only. However now my Power Steering is caput.

any ideas? resolutions that other have come up with?

thanks!

See the little control box below the alarm in that picture? (red circle)

IIRC that's the power steering control module. Are you sure you didn't bump the connector or otherwise mess with it? Try unplugging it and then plugging it back in.
