I'm surprised you didn't need to compress the spring prior to removing the top hat. Did it not shoot off?
For reference, its always a good idea to compress the spring first... there's usually a lot of stored potential energy in the assembly.

Not only is that an unsafe and ghetto process, but you've ensured there will be no more dampening action of the shock. It's now outside its range of travel, likely blowing out the seals.

And bouncy as hell in the front lol. It is going to be a very uncomfortable ride once you hit uneven road. Do it right and get some lowering springs or some nice adjustable coilovers bruh... :gotme :)

I thought it was common knowledge that the cut spring method was a no go because of the negative effects it has on the car's handling?

You'd be surprised.

Getting car knowledge from Facebook instead of forums, this is what you get.

-The spring fly off but less then what ppl expect , you can aim toward a old toolbox or a wall
-Its a familly thing my grand pa was cutting spring back in the 50's ,this is the deluxe version btw ,the old man never cared much about handling but he lived a stanced life

I like the pictures. You can see that these springs have been cut before. It seems like the previous cut was the limit and this cut is a bit too short and may toss a spring out with a good bump/ dip.

235 and 255 huh... showoff. :)

On a side note, I love the shoes! They remind me of the old Etnies. What kicks you rockin' SSS? I think I need some.
