How to: Clean Radar Detector Install

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

This will give you a clean and elegant radar detector install in your EX35 (and probably G37) with minimal intrusion into your vision. It will be out of the way and professional so you can forget about it until you need it. Also cops will not see it.

This will be your end result.

This is the only visible wire.

Use the long installation wire that comes with your radar detector. Start by pulling out the interior over the pillar which is shown above. Just pull it out a bit enough to push the wire in. Route the wire over to the weather sealing by the door and push it under that all the way down to the passenger foot well.

Remove the cover over the power harness by the right passenger foot area. There is a plastic upholstry nut that you can unscrew and pull off with your fingers. Also remove the panel under the glove box. It pulls off very easily. Now pull off the door seal plastic and the other one that encloses the right side of the dash. You do not need any tools to remove any of these interior panels. You can just use your hands and do it all within 5 minutes without any risk of damage.

Now look at the power harness on the BCM (body control module). We are going for the orange wire #3 in the diagram. It is the P/W power supply (RAP) at battery voltage when the ignition switch is ON, as referenced on page 54 of http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/EX/2008/INL.pdf .

It's the one here that can be seen stripped. I put a pink zip tie to hold all the wires in place. Please use a fuse on your radar detector. One should come with it.

Here is what you see on top of the visor.

And here's the final product.

This is what I use to mount my Valentine-One. They make them for Escort, too.

not to spoil it for Teknical, but IMHO there's a simpler way to hard-wire a radar detector -- to the rear view mirror. I can't find the thread I used for my installation but here's a thread for something like that on an Cadillac http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/ca ... irror.html Since all manafacturers pretty much use the same mirror supplier, the steps would be the same for Infiniti. The only trick is to find which wire is positive and which is a negative on both your radar and the mirror. If needed, I can post what location on the connector I used. All you need a $1 pack of d-sub pins from RadioShack. I also used an awl to "pre-allocate" holes for the pins in the connector so that it's easier to insert the pins. Also, instead of electric tape, I used shrink wrap.

Thanks everyone. If you read my post, YES I know you can install your radar up on your rear view mirror. The point of this is to get a cleaner look and function. In my opinion, cops will immediately see your detector hanging right in the middle of your windshield.
Also it would annoy me to have something in my face like that.
I'm not arguing about your preference, I'm just telling you how to do it my way, if you like.
And by the way, this only takes about 15 minutes.

I was scanning the forum for radar threads. I read on another site that it is essential to level your detector for accuracy.

Also read that the laser in the tech package on ex/g can be an issue?

After 15 years or so of using radar detectors, I have never noticed a big difference by changing a few degrees of its aim, so I don't think being level is very important. Also, there is no interference with the laser. I think once I have seen it go off when I was behind a Mercedes, but that doesn't usually happen.
