My exhaust tips are pretty dirty - tried some WD40, removed some dirt but far from all of it.And lower inside part of the tip is pitch black - WD40 didn't even scratch it.How do you clean your exhaust tips?

I cleaned mine with a wire brush on the inside, then the outside with a very fine emery cloth, then steel wool. I thought about using some chrome polish on them also, but I don't think I did.

Got them reasonable. Not new, but still looking good. Make sure the emery cloth si very fine though, or you could end up scratching the chrome.

Get a can of this stuff called Brake Parts Cleaner. Several brands are available. Do not let it get on painted surfaces or plastics. It's a highly effective solvent for bare metal of all types. Try not to get it on your hands for long durations.

Follow it up with a polish with the solvent soaked cotton wadding called Never-dull.

You can remove them for cleaning very easily.

They have a high ridge on top that holds them in place. Squeeze on both sides of a particular tip, and that will raise the top section, allowing you to slide it right off.

I used a degreasing dish soap like Dawn and a wool scrub pad. That got all the gunk off. Then I used a basic chrome/steel polish such as Eagle 1, and the looked brand new.

This was before I got my exhaust.

I have a Stillen system and if I let them go long enough, some pitting will begin to appear. I use the best wheel cleaner ever, P21S and fine steel wool. Removes all pitting on tips and works great on mufflers.

Like Yosm45 said, squeeze then and remove the tips for much easier cleaning. Just be sure you put them back on well!
