Hey Guys,

I've been looking up how to clean engine bays but I'm not finding a lot of solid information.

I've heard that Simple Green / Simple Green Extreme works well, but a couple of people said it eats away at stuff. One guy even said it ate through concrete which sounds kinda fishy.

I also found a thread on here suggesting similar things but there still doesn't seem to be a general consensus on what is best.

And probably my biggest fear is getting water where it shouldn't be. You guys know I don't know very much about performance, engine mods, intakes, exhaust, etc other than the basics but what can water touch and what shouldn't you let it touch? I know water in the engine is bad so I'm wondering how water won't get into the engine while you're spraying off the degreaser (the engine cover isn't 100% sealed off like a vacuum, or is it?). I also know some intakes such as CAI's need bypass valve's to keep water from getting into them. Is there any sort of precaution I should take with my stillen SRI?

I also just read that you should cover your intake and alternator (with aluminum?). Our alternators are towards the front of the bay near the bumper, right?

I'm getting ready for a show so I just wanna get things looking nice while doing it the right way. Thanks guys

I use simple green, and I've had no problems. Biggest issue is getting behind everything. Our engine bay is super cramped. I imagine it's not as bad for 2.5's, so maybe it won't be as bad for you.

Thanks IBC. How about the water issues, or how do you wipe yours down? Do I need to cover the alternator and intake?

Eh, I don't take any water precautions. I trust in the design of the car, and I trust that the air filter's going to do its job, as long as I'm not spraying anything directly into it.

My dad works at a dealer so I just ask him to pressure wash it with the hose they use to wash the cars. Actually that's what they use anyways when they do wash the engine bay, plus some degreaser. Hope this helps...

I'll use Armour All on the rubber hoses. I also cover my air filter intake with plastic and then lightly spray the compartment. Wipe down with a cotton rag and I'm good to go.

a little water in the engine bay won't hurt the car. some guys have the vented hoods which allows water to get in all the time. just don't be shoving a power washing down the engine bay
