Ok, so I have been detailing for 12 years now and I have cleaned countless engine bays. If the engine bay is greasey, your gonna want to use a degreaser, Gunk engine brite foam is usually what i would use(this will leave a smell for a little while as it burns off your motor, sometimes i wont use that because some customers dont like the smell, but sometimes it has to be used), now that doesnt mean you want to spray the whole engine bay with that, use that on the heavier greasey areas, valve cover area, around the engine, etc. if the whole engine bay is just horrible, yes spray it on everything. yes cover any exposed air filter or distributors; if the distributor is dirty, clean it with a rag. But in a better situation, where your engine isnt horrible, spray nine or simple green is better suited.Regardless of what you use, never let it dry on the paint or anything in the bay, it WILL leave stains. I usually spray it on, let it sit for a few mins and then give it spritz of water, be attentive to it, dont let it sit to long. you can soak down everything with it and it will be much less harsh than a degreaser and wont stink while drying off. Now regardless of what your using your gonna want to use a brush to clean most of the engine, a long medium firmnesss brush is what i use. I wouldnt use a brush that you value much on the greasey parts, usually i just try to let the degreaser do most of the work and then go over the bad areas again with the simple green or spray nine. I use a air hose to blow off excess water from around all electrical parts and while im doing that the car is running. I dont run the car till after im done washing , obviously. but run the car while you are blowing it off. once dry. I used a great product by "Wurth" called rubber care. Its a rubber conditioner and keeps the underhood looking more factory then a shine. Silcolene pro prep is also a great product for conditoning surfaces. another great product for underhood, or for any plastic or rubber, is by a company call a"malco" and the product is called "shine it'. This is all stuff i have used for years. Anyways i could go on forever and if anyone ever wants there car detailed or they would want to learn I can definetly help.
