Hi, I would appreciate if someone can give me any tips and hints on how to change the A/T Fluid. I bought the oil strainer, the O ring and a new oil pan gasket. I know that I have to take the oil pan out, the strainer is hold by four 10mm bolts and then just pull it out gently. But I want to get rid of the old oil as much as I can. I know that the A/T holds 8.3 l or 8-3/4 qt (with the torque converter ), the torque converter itself holds about 2 liters or 2-1/8 qt. How do you flush the A/T entirely without taking it out of the car ? And how many oil should I buy what brand do you recommend ?

Thanks in advance

Two options.
A mechanical flush at a BG flush certified transmission shop.
I would only do this if I could watch the procedure and make sure they do it with proper chemicals/replacement fluid.
www.bgfindashop.com

or a drain/refill procedure that many including I have done.

If you go the drain/refill route you will need to buy about 14 quarts of transmission fluid.
Fsm shows Dexron II as spec but III or higher will work.
You can also get the Nissan fluid from a Nissan/Infiniti dealer if you are uber anal about it. :gapteeth:
Get two tupperware type containers that will hold at least 4/5 quarts of fluid.

Drain the pan into one of the two containers.
Pull the pan and replace the filter/screen AND the Oring.

Then clean out the debris from the pan.
If you have more than say a large pea sized mass of clutch material start saving for a new transmission. :)
Clean the lip of the pan install the new gasket.
I found it easier to put a bolt on the 4 corners through the gasket and then loosely install the pan.
Install the rest of the pan bolts loosely the tighten them down in a star pattern according to the FSM spec torque amount.

Then set the container with old fluid next to the other empty container.
Fill with new fluid to the same level of old fluid.
With a transmission fill Funnel pour the new fluid in.
Start the motor and run the transmission through ALL the gears.
Letting each gear run for 5/10 seconds.

Driving around the block is optional as long as long as all gears are engaged.
Shut engine off and do the same drain/ refill with putting in what you drained out
till the fluid coming out is as pink and fresh as what your putting in.

I personally prefer the mechanical machine flush. It pushs out all the used transmission fluid. I've been doing it on the J since new and the transmission still shifts flawlessly.

Agreed,
But I had 160K mileage when I bought my J and was leary of a chemical flush not knowing the transmission service history.
How many miles on your J driver ??
Getting close to 200K on mine and "knock on wood" transmission still shifts fine.
I understand the mechanical/chemical flush removes varnish buildup but I have heard from many old timers its not healthy for a well used auto transmission.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll with yoda on this one. The flush is the best thing to do on a new car. I've been to couple of places and they all turn around when asked to change the transmission oil. I'll do it my self and since I'm gonna need 14 qt I'll have to go with advance autoparts one :P And after all comes out pink I'll put good one.
Thanks again for the input guys
