I just bought a 89 240sx and I need to put new belts on it. I don't really want to pay a shop to do it cuz I want to do most of the work on the car myself or with other 240 owners. But I need some help and suggestions on how to do it?

This is for 1991-1994 without air conditioning or Idler pulley:

Good question. You have to move the power steering belt first. I'm not sure if you have remove fan. I'll post what I know about removing power steering belt and alternator belt. This is from my water pump tutorial.

Removing alternator belt:

There is a 14mm bolt at bottom(alternator pivots on this bolt) and the two 14mm bolts associated with tensioner at top. The bottom bolt and the bolt that locks tensioner to engine face front of car. The bolt used to adjust tension is accessed from passenger side of car. The bottom bolt and bolt that locks tensioner must be loosened. You'll still need a wooden pry bar to move alternator or a rubber mallet. Be careful not to damage something with pry bar. Same as power steering tensioner, the alternator tensioning bolt only tightens.

Removing pump/crank/power steering belt:

Free the water pump/crank/power steering belt by moving the powersteering pump. There is one 14 mm nut and one 14 mm bolt to loosen. The tensioner only tightens the belt so it wont help you. It does not loosen belt..

This is the 14mm nut you loosen. It is the nut that locks the tensioner.

Tensioning bolt(dont remove. Pic is for interest):

Second thing to loosen. It is a 14mm bolt on opposite side of pump fromtensioner:(picture expands)

Tensioning specs from MA-8 of factory service manual:

For a used belt the deflection should be: alternator belt=7.5 millimeters, airconditioning and power steering belts =8 millimeters. For a new belt, the deflection will be be 1 millimeter less. Adjust when engine is cold.It is important that the deflection is close to specs. Measure deflectionwhere the pulley has longest expanse.
