I haven't changed the rotors on my R50 yet, but I did them on my 97 240sx. . it was easy, and they actually just sort of slid off after the caliper was out of the way.
I did change my pads on my QX4 though (99.5, but should be identical).
1) Lift up vehicle2) Remove wheel3) Remove cap on brake fluid reservoir, located under hood3) Remove lower of the two bolts on the caliper4) Swing caliper up -- I used a coat hanger to tie it to the spring, so it won't fall down5) Remove pads (two on each side of truck)6) Use a C-clamp to compress the pistons (two on each side of truck)7) Put pads on, and reverse steps to put it back together
Note: You may want to buy new shims for the brakes, or may want to use anti-squeal spray, Personally I just re-use the shims normally, and spray the backside of each caliper (before putting shims back on) with anti-squeal compound, let dry then install. Last time I didn't bother with the spray, and I got some duralast or something at Autozone that came with shims. . I just put them on as is, and have no squealing issues.
It's not too bad to do
Unfortunately I saw this after taking off the first set. This is exactly what I did for the pads, the rotors were a little bit more involved. I should have taken pictures to show others, sorry guys, it really wasn't that difficult though.
After you get the caliper bracket off you just pop open the cap, remove 2 small phillips screws, pull out a locking plate, unscrew this other round plate and everything comes right out. I did re-pack the wheel bearings too. The first one I tried took about 2 hours and the 2nd one only took about 1/2 hour.
I examined the old pads and they had shims on them and the new pads came with shims so I threw them on there. Unfortunately everything I found online was for the 4WD QX4 which was standard up until 99 I think. Apparently that's a completely different assembly than my 2WD 01. Seems to be a little more difficult.
If anyone need any help let me know, it's pretty simple. My next goal is to replace the shoes and drums, then maybe the struts. I think I'll leave the shocks to my mechanic.
