My project started awhile ago when I came across an S14 SR20det. When I first found this little gem she was sitting in a garage with a hole in a piston where the previous owner had abused it. I bought the motor and transmission for $200 and started my project. After tearing apart the bottom end I had found out the the poor thing was worse off than I thought. So 1 year and some dough later it finally became alive.............

so we start with a bare block, thats my hand putting the oil squirters in....yay.....

so thats with the squirters in.....

so after that lets put the pistons together and in.....YAY......

so with the pistons in we'll go ahead and finish off the bottom end....

so with the bottom end assembled lets flip it over and see what she looks like....

wow darton sleeves and wiescos sure look pretty......

So now that the bottom end is done lets look at the head.....BAM that was quick huh!?!

hmmm so lets get some accesories on this MO FO!!!

and just for kicks what will it look like with the mani's and turbo on? hmmm......

and now this beast is set-up for 500whp.....stay tuned for a dyno sheet.......

Thanks for tuning in on how to build an SR in 30 seconds!

Don't be fooled! Even though the actual physical work may look easy in those pics, the mental abuse and pocket abuse will be the toughest part... The cost of rebuilding that engine was not mentioned... my wallet already hurts just thinking of it!

There should be less groaning about it and more filling in the guys who haven't done it yet.

I was being sarcastic. Although, I do plan to one day do a fresh rebuild on one of my SR's with all OEM parts.

There wasn't anything that wasn't replaced on that motor. I went will all OEM nissan parts and it didn't cost that much for the base rebuild. Including the cost of the motor, turbo, clutch...everything there possibly is. (Keep in mind that I did replace EVERYTHING!) I've spent around 6k that also includes the 850cc injectors and the standalone. Just the OEM parts for the rebuild...those were only around 8-900. That also includes all new sensors. Paul Sinclair was kind enough to hook me up with some parts here and there that I couldn't source here in the US. I'll make a list of all the mods done to it once I actually get a fresh dyno sheet posted. I know that I'll be hitting 500whp or bust this time!

nice. 900, that number is for jsut the block rebuild right? cause i've been thinking about geting a spare block just in case and i was honestly expecting to spend around 2000 to rebuild the block and head

all oem parts and nothing fancy done like bore or pistons or anything like that. Yeah thats cheap. Here's a really quick break down without looking at reciepts. (this is from the local nissan dealer)

Timing set---$180Oil FIlter----$3Gasket kit--$115Head bolts/main/rod---$150 with all washers and everythingWP-----------$150Bearings----$120Misc. Nuts bolts---------$40

damn well I suppose thats about it, that comes out to $608. So I was off. My pistons came with rings so you can tack on another $50 for those from nissan if you don't have a spare set. So I guess about $660 will get you a complete rebuild. Hope that helps some, for 2k though you can also get forged pistons and rods, or for a little bit more you can do pistons/sleeves and have the sleeves put in. My bottom end cost me about $1100 with another $460 for the block work. The head got a little more expensive but I'll quit ranting. Let me know if you need any part numbers or anything, I'll try and help you out.

yea, part numbers would be great. i jsut wish i could come across a CHEAP *** block like you did. that was a find. but i plan on doing a competely stock rebuild as well seeing as how 500bhp is possialbe and i'm not gonna be anywhere near that.

also, i'm guessing that you attend KU eh?

also: where do you get your machine work done? anywhere in kansas?

nope not a KU attender right now, I'm at JCCC till next year where I'm takin this beast to portland. I'll do some digging to find all the part numbers for you. As for the machine work, yeah I had it all done at a shop thats about 15 min outside of lawrence. He builds alot of the Nissan SCCA race motors here. Great guy like him alot, if your ever in the area you should hit me up and I'll introduce you to him.

apparently Darton sleeves are a 2 step sleeve so that means you have to bore it out twice. To resleeve it, bore it out .20, and hone, hottank, it was $460. If they weren't 2 step sleeves it would've been $200

Congrats! I guess this means I'm going to have to finally come up there and do that wiring for you huh?

500hp? I'll still beat you with my CA!

Did I mention we're only racing from 0-80mph?

Yea, you've got me beat in the traction department. This new turbo is gong to HAVE to stay at low boost. I was barely keeping the tires stuck in 1st gear at stock boost with the old turbo and tires. This one should be worse. I can't wait for 14psi though. Man this thing is gonna scream. At least for a GT2 series turbo...

Nice short run though. I wish I had the cash to do a rebuild right now, maybe next year.
