How the iPod interface work?

Anyone know how the car radio control the ipod? What I want to know is that when the ipod is connected to the usb interface, is the decoding done by the ipod or the head unit of the car?

My guess is that the decoding is done by the ipod as the head unit in the Rogue does not support AAC at all. Is that right? If the decoding is done by the ipod, is the audio being sent to the head unit through the usb as pcm stream?

Once you plug your Ipod into the usp port, you can no longer control it with the ipod. You have to use the car radio controls.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know that the head unit controls the ipod. Just want to know how the ipod communicates with the head unit and more importantly how the audio signal is transferred.
