How soon to change the oil/fluids in a "fresh" JDM motor?

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

Now that my RB20 is in and running, its time to start worrying about the fluids.

Mainly I want to know how soon I should change the oil. I have about 2-3 minuets of run time so far, nothing substantial since my coolant system isn't fully bled yet. But tomorrow I'm going to start driving around.

I was thinking a few trips around the block, and a run to the advance auto where I used to work and change it after that. It would end up being 45-60min total probably. And then again at 500 miles or so. Does that seem right?

And of course Id like to stay out of the NRRBA!

The coolant will get filled with water and flush crap twice. Do you guys think that'll be enough to get rid of the rust that's probably in my block?

The power steering will get flushed out a few times over the coming months at random times.

Have u ever heard words like "Your oil is too clean" or "Your filter is too clean"???? Take a FSM or user's manual and read!

I would have checked/changed the fluids before starting it...

No never heard that. I change my oil every 3k or so on my KAs and other cars and its usually really black.

When I got the engine there was no oil pan on it so obviously its got new oil in it. I just want to make sure before I start taking it to autox/drift events the cooling and oil systems are OK.

So what if I'm paranoid, this is my first jdm/expensive engine.

I would run that oil for a bit heat cycle the motor a couple times then change it out.

Get all the crap out of the motor.

Then put good oil in it and change your oil at regular intervals unless your racing it.

If you're really paranoid you can cut open the oil filter on the first oil change to see if you've collected any bits.

it depends on how often/hard you track it and what oil you use

a cheap oil shouldnt be used/should be changed after every event. something like redline or royal purple can go a few events before you should change it.

i used to go 3-5 events on the same oil but was diligent in inspecting the oil and filter and i also ran redline. ive been doing events for years and have never had an oiling issue on 2 completely different engines now, so i guess it worked haha
