how smooth is your transmission

Ok so i was riding with my friend on Saturday he has a Cl 500 benz v8 2006 and i noticed how smooth his transmission shifts
I mean you can hear it shift but you can't feel it much, it was like he has CVT but it's not. so a paid more attention to my car and it shift smooth but you can still feel the gear transition. I'm not saying it's jerking cause its not but the gear transition feels different based on how much i get on the gas his car was more consistent any thoughts? Also can someone please explain how the transmission adapts to my driving and does this affect how it feels
