ok, the manual says to change your oil every 3,750 miles. but my brother, who's all into cars and works on them, and graduated from UTI says I should change it every 3,000 miles. what do you guys think?

Should I change the oil every 3,750 or 3,000 miles?

Quite frankly, the 3000 miles myth may have been for most average cars back in the day. Most new cars I see from Nissan say 3750 miles. My '05 Altima 2.5's manual said 3750.

It's not like at 3000 miles the oil changes into sludge and stops working. I've had oil changes done at 4000 miles and 3500 miles. My car still lives. The oil used in cars today is more high quality than it may have been before.

On the other hand, if this is a brand new car I'd say get 'er done as to what you feel is safe. The metal shavings (if any large significant amount) from the engine breaking in might be a good thing to get rid of sooner. I think. But really, do as the manual says. I doubt they would lie to you and have you explode your engine hahah.... or would they?

3750 - it's what the warranty recommends.

Quite honestly, you could probably get 5k on dino oil nowadays - oils are being made better and better, and filters are as well. I more than likely could get close to 7500 out of my M1 with M1 filter, as my oil is fairly clean when I change it at 3750, but I don't want to screw up my warranty. 3000 is an old myth....even said so by my dad, who has worked for Exxon Mobil for nearly the past 30 years and helped make the stuff.

For more oil and filter information than you can absorb, check out this oil related site. Tons of useful information.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

You too can become an oil and filter expert in just a few short weeks!

The site, bob is the oil guy, does not try to sell you something.

I am on the site so often that my wife thinks I am crazy for looking at all of the 'grey boxes', as she calls them.

I did my first oil change at 3200 miles. After that, it's been every 5-6k. I've been using the synthetic mobil 1 oil.

My last car (Olds Alero) there was many times I changed it 7-9k miles. Car still was running great when I traded it in for the a/c. Had about 128k miles on it.

If you're worried, send it away for analysis. I've started using schedule 2 (7.5k changes) and analysis pretty much told me that I could go longer. Oil still had lots of life left in it.

yea, i plan on doing it myself. that's why i was wondering exactly when i should be changing my oil. I go to Las Vegas at least once a month, so that pushes my miles up faster than usual. And I had been planning on going to Vegas this weekend also, so I would either be needing to change my oil before or after the trip. But there sum drama going on in my fam. So i might just end up staying in CA and driving down to Stillen either this weekend or Monday for a new Intake.

Why? You don't need it, really, and yes, I know all about synthetic olis, IMO you are wasting your money there. Personal preference I guess.Unless you have like 100k on your coupe...or did Jiffy lube con u into it along with some Valve stem lube and some new inner tubes for your tires?

Spark plugs every 5k miles??? ROFL. Where and why and who told you to do that? As far as I know you don't need to worry about spark plugs until well into the cars life around 40-50k or even 100k miles before worrying about them.

At any rate, every 5k is a bit early to make any difference at all in the car's performance. But hey, it's your wallet.

do it at 3k if you drive hard. screw it do it at 3 k anyway. its not a big deal if it goes over to 4 k but you get the picture. lol i dont let it go past 4k with mobile 1 extended erpormance. motor oil is not a magical substance. it beaks down as you drive. end of story.

I would follow the owners manuel service booklet. I used to till I turboed my car. Now I have to change my oil every 2,000-2,500. I have always used synthetic and still followed the service booklet. It's always a good question though to maintain the car in great running condition .
