How often do you change the transmission oil. Mine is a manual transmission and the oil has not been changed for more than 3 years. The manual says it needs to be changed every 3 years. Do you follow this? What oil do you recommend.

AMSOIL GL - 4 is the best stuff you can put in your 240 transmission. MAKE SURE its gl-4 or your syncros will crap out on you. You cant just buy gl - 4 from most places, its hard to find. Google it and buy it online.

You need to change it if its been that long. You need 3 bottles.

transmission oil has very long change intervals.. but if you do racing you should change it more often. You shouldnt change it with normal driving any more often then 50k miles, iirc the manual calls for 90 or 100k for transmission/diffy oil change.

i go by every 2 years or every 24,000 miles using 80w90 gear oil and and regular pump from any auto parts store, takes 1/2 an hour and a little mess but thats it. cheap and easy service on a manual transmission -

I change the oil in my transmission and diff every 2 years around Fathers Day. Religously.

As far as changing the transmission oil, jack up the car and peek at the bottom of the transmission. There will be a drain plug that can be removed with a 1/2 drive breaker bar. Slightly up on the driver? side of the transmission, there will be another plug, also a 1/2". Remove that one as well. After the oil has drained replace the plug and torque to spec. Leave the second plug off for now.Remove the shifter boots (yes, inside the car) and with a funnel add fresh gear oil to the transmission from the top. once oil starts dripping out the side of the transmission (the plug you left off) stop adding oil. Replace anything you removed, wipe down transmission and replace plug, torque to spec, and wash her down. Look for leaks, etc. etc.Use common sense throughout the proceedure. I am sure there is another way to re-fill the transmission, I just find it easier to do so from the top.

Make sure the side bolt comes out first or you may find yourself with no way to fill the empty transmission. If you have a long enough hose you can put it down thru the engine bay, but that takes 2 people.

I agree, although you can fill a transmission though the shifter hole in a pinch.
