I got another CA for the corolla and i noticed an extra wire on it.... and it was the knock sensor..... it was never on the other car and seemed to run OK. the timing seemed to be a little off but i dont know, does this affect anything on the car besides backing off timing if there are signs of detonation?

i know some cars it doesnt mean anything and some cars will hardly run without it.

if i do need this plugged in ill need to know what pin/color/gauge on the ecu connector so i can wire it in myself. it was either cut off by accident or never was on the harness and was taped over when i had it modified.

anybody!? help! i set the car at 15 BTDC and it has hardly any power... almost seems like a similar issue like the "timing hungry CA" post.

well if it seems similar, then have you inspected your cas yet? is your ECU throwing any codes? have you re-checked your timing since you set it and drove it? would you like someone to come over and hold your hand? jokes aside... what have you done to try and figure it out so far?

I thought my timing was DEAD on when I first put the belt on. I mean, I was meticulous. Car started up and was sluggish beyond belief. Turns out it was a tooth off on the belt. Seriously, you may as well use the FSM as toilet paper when it comes to the timing procedure.

the # of teeth between each point in the sprocket worked for me. Just count them, make sure all marks line up and rotate twice. Check again. rinse and repeat. Make sure it's tight enough as well

well this is a dead stock motor that was out of an auto car. not modified what so ever so i dont know if the timing is off. i put the cams on the timing marks(rotating it with just the top cover off. and the bottom pulley was on 0 on the crank pulley.

also i dont know if improper grounding will throw a false reading for timing or make it run funky? it will borderline stall sometimes when i come to a stop and sometime it will.

i havnt checked the codes since the motor was changed out from the other CA but i noticed with the other engine i had to do the same thing, advance the timing on the CAS to get any kind of power out of it... right now i think it is set around 21-23 degree's, the motor is stock it has an S14 turbo stock boost(5psi 7psi in 4th and 5th) and small front mount 2.5'' straight exhaust and hks mushroom filter.

i am thinking it is a grounding issue. now that i think of it , i have one 4 gauge ground from the strut tower area to the intake manifold and one 10-8 gauge(not sure) from the firewall to the back of the intake.

how many more will i need?

also the ignitor is not grounded, does this matter?

sorry if all these questions are stupid.

alright i put 4 more grounds on it and it still seems to be the same.

only one code, 55, so i dont think its sensor related.

unless its a faulty timing light? i know when i first started after it ran for a minute i put the light on it and it bounced from 20 degree's to 5degree's so i dont know what was going on there but it only happened once.

Update!

i put new grounds on it and then i checked the timing, it showed it was only at 10 degree's, i set it to 15 and now it seems like it has a ton of power more. i also switched to a 78 jdm ecu instead of the euro 98 ecu.

but the CAS looks as if it is advanced all the way, only another 3/8-1/2'' away from being maxed out. is this normal?

So is the knock sensor hooked up or not?

If it's not hooked up, don't bother trying to set the timing. I'm assuming since you said you got a 55 out of the ECU that it's hooked up.

If it is hooked up, then the only way what you're saying is possible is if the keyway in the cam slipped. No way to fix it except put a different cam in on the exhaust side.

I dont think the 98 ECU is particularly a EDM ecu. My clip came with a #98 ECU and it was definitely a JDM car.

i put a post up about it and thats what someone stated. but i was just passing on mis-information i guess.

but yes i did hook up the knock sensor.

is it normal for it to run only around 5.5psi? i do have a "relocated" turbo(for fitment) basically a short "S" bend and it is from an S14. would this matter at all?

either way i can still blast the 205's off the car rolling on it in 2nd and borderline break loose in 3rd rolling on it.(the car does have LSD) im going to have the car weighed tonight and possibly race some of my friends high to mid 14 second cars to see about where im at.

overall im happy with the CA18 so far.
