So I'm thinking of buying a SL with CVT. What did you guys manage to get off MSRP? How do I play the "game" better during negotiation.

Pay the $30 bucks to CarCostCanada.com and get the invoice pricing and disclosure of any incentives. You will save hundreds just by having this info. You need it to properly negotiate.

Then read through this guy's website: http://www.carbuyingtips.com

He gives you all the tips for negotiating and exposes the various scams employed by dealers designed to separate you from your money.

Good Luck

I don't think you really "need it." I mean, it's all about negotiation. We all know there's only about $700 in markup in the Versa. The dealership is a business, if you want to buy a car, pay the price. We don't negotiate the price of our steaks.

I knew nothing about negotiating vehicle prices before I bought my V. When I purchased my truck several years ago, the dealer gave me a set price. I believed it was a good price so I accepted. After walking out I couldn't help but think, "Could I have paid a lot less?" Before I went to buy my V, I stopped by carbuyingtips.com and read through the whole site and then went into the dealer. I negotiated my price when the V was so hot, you couldn't find one on any lot. Everyone said, "The car's in such high demand and there aren't many around, you won't find a dealer to negotiate. No one's going to negotiate on a car that doesn't have a huge profit margin and you have to order it just to get it." I walked out of the dealership with a car that was supposed to cost $14,395 that I paid 14k even. As configured, the invoice was $13,775. Due to an error on the dealer's part, I got VIN etching for free. So that means I got a $14,795 car for 14K. There are tips like the best time to go to the dealership, the tricks the "Financing Manager" will play to get you to buy extras, and how to make a fair offer without bankrupting the dealer. It's good info. The naysayers are normally the one who've ended up paying sticker.

The dealer will tell you that there isn't much wiggle room in the price, but there is. MRSP plus freight on an SL with CVT is $19,648. I got it for $18,824.

It wouldn't hurt to do a little research on negotiating or at least bring someone with you that'll look out for you.

I've found it a lot easier to negotiate up from a known price (invoice) than to try and negotiate down from the MSRP (an imaginary number). Plus the CCC quote may contain incentive details that may not be public.

Quite right about the steak though. But the grocery store doesn't try to charge us separately for the transport to bring the meat from the farm to the store, the cost of trimming the steak, coating the steak with a nice marinade, cleaning the floor in the butcher shop, wrapping the steak in a styrofoam tray with plastic wrap, "etching" the price on the package, putting a weekly flyer in the local paper, etc.

If there was actually a one price policy across the board, that would be fine too. Since the industry has evolved into a negotiated price system, you have to play the game. If you don't want to play, then you pay more.

These guys use the "Jedi Mind Tricks" (as the guy from the car buying tips site calls them) to convince you they are doing you a favor, all the while, padding their profit.

Besides, negotiating can be fun too.

Didn't have to negotiate because of a deal through my work. I don't know the final price to the exact number but when i was lookin at the 6spd SL with tech package it was less than the MSRP (without taxes freight etc.) with taxes, freight and everything included. Since there are no 6spd SL with tech package in all of ontario, or quebec i went with a cvt on their lot which they gave me more money off once again.

It depends a lot on the model. I got a good deal on mine because my cousin worked at the dealership. I got an SL CVT when they were really hard to get too, the main reason I got the SL was because I could save more money on it.

Basically.. the more stuff it has, and the more expensive it is: the more markup there is.

There is virtually no markup on a base S model with standard. an SL CVT though.. there's a fair bit there. It's basically all the extra stuff that gives the room to negotiate.

if they try to charge you an extra grand because of high demand or whatever..get up and start to walk out...then theyll take that right off.
