It cannot be done. I'll let you know before anyone else says it not so politely. If you have silly coin and patience and a vision plan on a LOT for a fully street legal one. "Fully" street legal R34 Skylines retail for about $86k. but for a definitive answer you will wanna specify which make and model. R32, R33, R34, GT-R, GT-S, GT-V, 25GT-T, bla bla

Grey market. Buy a totaled 240 and swap the vins. if asked say it was a restoration job with massive body work. No one (you hope) will notice and it'll give you a rush everytime a cop pulls up behind you. seriously though Florida is a great place to Grey market a skyline. I know 7 people who own them grey market and dont have any trouble. But of course I dont condone anything illegal

Were I in the market for an R, had the money and was ready to move I would do the following.

What you are doing now, get leads on importers and filter out obviously shady prospects.

Familiarize myself with the basic rules involved to further filter out iffy companies, Check the better business bearu(never could spell that).

Contact the final companies via e-mail for record and scratch off anybody who gave me bad vibes.

Secure the services of a lawyer who was experienced in this area and have him look over the last group of finalists.

Have him contact them and get his take, drop any company he is uncomfortable with.

Now talk cost, and service with the finalists and narrow it down to one. Arrange to meet them in person on-site and bring my lawyer.

If all is on the up and up, the layer is satisfied that everything is good and you are happy with the price, service and terms do the deal.

It might seem excessive but I don't take the purchase of a $40,000-$80,000 used car, possibly sight unseen and potentially illegal after all that via a google search, e-mail and phone conversations and a Paypal transaction.

First problem is that the R32 stopped production in 1994. '95 was R33 only. Second, an R32 can be had for the $20k you mentioned, but not a street legal one. I know of at least 3 R32's that are all well under $20k here in the U.S., but they can't be legally registered. Anyone claiming to have a legal R32 for under $30k would most likely be shady. Now, as for the importation, I can answer that for you. I have brought in 3 cars from Japan myself and am bringing one in from Australia right now. The only cars you can bring in without trouble are ones over 25 years old. They are Federally exempt from DOT and EPA requirements. Shipping from Japan is roughly $1000, then all your Customs fees and taxes will run about $500. This can vary slightly depending on the declared value of the car itself.

Incorrect. You can import the chassis and motorset seperately and register the vehicle as a kit car. Fully legal. Can be done for 15K if you can reinstall the motorset yourself.

Sticky read. I stand corrected. I still think it would be easier to kit car it though.

its not easier if its not legal.

If you seriously think you have the money for a skyline go to the NHTSAs website and find the list of registered importers and contact them. You will find out real quick you need to put the pipe dream away.

Well say I want one for a showcar/track whore, not road legal, how much would an R32 GT-R cost me?

There are slightly different rules that apply to imported show cars, but from last reading them, I don't think the Skyline qualifies. A imported show car has to have a reason to be put on display(i.e. amazing engineering ahead of its time coupled with low production numbers).

As for a track car, I think those were fairly easier. Of course, if you ever drove it on the road it would be destroyed at your cost.

Really, you need to get in contact with an RI in your area and talk this over with them. I am sure they have go through these very questions everyday.
