How much cutting and splicing has to be done when doing a swap. I know there are like 6 or 7 wires under the dash that have to be cut and spliced and i know there are some up near the battery. Is that all the ones that have to be done? How many total do you have to cut and wire back together? 20? 30?50? Just looking for a ball park answer. Are you left with a whole bunch of wires that just go to nothig when you are done? I already searched but couldn't find much.

ThanksShawn

Well 3 for the MAFS a few if you retain AC and just the ones in the dash. For an S13 SR going into an S13.

yes it is a S13 red top going in to a 240 hatch.

I also heard youhad to lenghten some wires. I think the ones going to the MAF was one of them. Is this right. So total thats only like 20 wires to redo. I wonder how many you have left over after you get done. I was reading through some of the FAQ's and it seems even the bigger installers don't know where all the wires go. I think there are someunder the dash that go to the check connector coming of the ECU. Can i hook these up too? I want to make this swap as factory as possible.

ThanksShawn

My installer (I'm not THAT mechanically inclined) was showing me the wiring stuff. I took off the HICAS and I don't have AC anymore. So there were about 5 wires under the hood that were loose and weren't connecting to anything. As for under the dash, I only remember one or two. But I"m sure I'm wrong about that one.

wouldnt more wiring be required if they are swapping it in a 89, since you have to get the DOHC tac/speedo?

No, more wiring is not needed because of the tach. He has to pull out his gauge cluster and put a 91+ or SR tach in to make it exactly like a 91+ or SR, at least in that respect.

Go to http://www.heavythrottle.com they have the ECU diagram. I extended my ECU 3 ft over from the clip. Use some heat shrink tube to each naked wire when you do this to prevent moisture trust me it will be worth it in the long run. There are a million wires coming from the ECU :pface just cut and extend. Hope this helps.:)

So do i have to cut and splice those "million" Wires back together if i want to extend them? Acording to heavy throttle this is the neat way to do it.

Yes cut and splice, extend. If you got a clip to explain better the ECU will be on the opposite side of the car since its Right hand drive causing you to have to extend 2.5-3ft. It will be messy but a couple rolls of electrical tape around those wires will fix it. I got a crappy computer so I dont have pics.

DO NOT leave those wires naked sitting on top or back of the valve cover.*this has already happened to someone wires melted* :rolleyez

Your best bet is to do the swap yourself with a front clip. Extending the ECU harness is easy its part of the swap.

When I said a million wires I was exaggerating. Its only like 60 or 70 I think. Hell I didnt count:D ;)

EDIT-keep everything until you are done.

Well the ECU uses a 64 pin plug so that should give you some idea :-) But I think there are only 52-57 that are actually used.

So Im trying to get a visual on this.... If I'm infering it right...... Theres one big harness that connects all of the engine parts then that harness connects to a seprate harness that goes to the ECU which im guessing is about 3 feet long??

Let me know... cuz if thats right...... the electric wiring sounds a whole lot easier now

also whats this about 10 or so wires extra under the dash?? they'd be a completely different set of wires then the ones already forementioned?

is there any way to get around cutting and extending the wiring harness? I mean i just don't like the idea of cutting and splicing 60 Wires just seems to be to much of a potential problem in teh future. I guess it comes down to ho well they are put back together though. Any way to get around it?

ThanksShawn

No we are only talking about 1 harness. The harness connects to the ECU, all the engine sensors, injectors, MAF etc. It also connects to the engine fuse box/relay box, the cruise, and the ignition/dash.

I've never extended one so I don't know exactly what needs extending, but apparently it's necessary to fit the RHD harness in our LHD cars.

If you're not confident doing this, and want a professional job, get HT or Daunt to do it. They'll get everything the right length, and in the right place etc.
