So when I pulled the R axle on my '94 Maxima, I spilled a lot of transmission oil on the ground. What is this, Dexron II ? And how much, a couple of litres/quarts?

I would guess it wold be a quart or so.

The best way to be sure is to start the car and let it run for a few minutes till it reaches operating temperature, the check the dipstick if the level is below the hash marks start adding a small amount at a time till it reaches most of the way up the hash marks.

Nissan genuine is recommended but any high quality DextronII will work just fine.

thanks for the help steve. this was kind of a stupid question/topic on my part. I think it's impossible for anyone to answer the amount!! it's like asking how long is a piece of string.

but you were actually pretty close. I had the car jacked up pretty high, so the angle probably helped minimize spillage. It was right around a quart, maybe a bit more. I sure hope the age of the fluid doesn't matter. I have a 5 gallon pail of Dexron IIE I used, but I've had it for years. It is NEW fluid, just hasn't been used from that huge pail.

As long as the container was sealed it should be fine. Moisture can cause oil to become caustic (only enough to harm rubber components, though) but if you keep it in a sealed container it should be fine.
