Hi:
I have the 91 TT, almost 25yr old. the painting look getting old now
I went to a professional body shop, they told me it cost $4500 to repaint the whole car.
then I was thinking to dip the Z.
anyone went to the shop to dip your Z ? how much it will cost?
people say it don't look good when look closer, is it true?

please give me some idea.
Thanks

Well, $4,500 is a little steep for a simple paint job, but not for a high quality job and especially if there is any rust removal or dents or other body repairs needed. $2,500 should be for a decent job without a lot of body work or prep, and from a nationwide chain type shop (less quality) and up to $5K for a high end shop that uses quality paints and techniques.
When it comes to paints, Plastidip and a correct automotive finish are not even in the same universes for both quality and looks, and I can't imagine any body shop even considering using Plastidip paint- which is applied from a spray can, and intended for other uses due to it's nature of being easily removable.
Automotive finishes require repair bodywork and preparation before applying primer, paint, and clear coat which are intended to last a long time with a very good luster and durability, while Plastidip was created for quickie painting of small items where the owner will want to remove the paint easily, wants to change colors often, and doesn't care much about the look quality or it lasting very long.

Hope this clears up your situation!

They make a professional style kit depending on how thick you want it and how good, what colors and so on. All the prep and dip cleaners and everything you need to keep it looking good will be around 500 or 600$.

I see plasti dip as a do it yourself quick/short term fix.

It IS NOT DURABLE and will likely start looking pretty ratty in a year or two.

I plasti dipped parts of my Z a little more than a year ago. I'm very happy with it so far, but there are a couple of spots where it is starting to show wear in a couple of spots.

I just "rattle canned" it, and was fairly impressed with how well it self leveled. No runs drips or errors. But in no way does it look like a professional paint job.

I'm not talking about DIY plasti dip job.
actully, in NYC, some body shops doing the plasti dip to the customer.
they use the spray gun and big gallons of plasti dip paint,(mostly matt finish paint) also in a painting room
lower cost to customer, faster job to the shop.. the customer understand it don't last long (1-2 yrs)

I was just wondering if it's really that bad when look real close, after the car run on the street after a while..

Ah. I see.

Still ultimately a band aid. But if you know that going in, and it is only a few $100 maybe not too bad of a thing.

Seeing as though a dip is a dip, you might be able to find more info on Google regarding the quality and cost of the job you can expect.
