How much to fix this rust

I recently bought a 2001 Maxima GLE. For some reason it is starting to rust behind the rear doors on both sides. Is this common or has the car been in an accident?

That will be difficult to do online. Even a body shop will just probably give you a guess-timate. It's possible that the door water drain lines are clogged, allowing water/dirt to accumulate inside the door. The door trim has to be removed to see the extent of the corrosion. It may also be a sign of neglect - previous owner not bothering to clean the car regularly. Road salt, common in cold areas, is corrosive.

Take it to several body shops and get written estimates.
