How much timing should I retard for 8psi? Need to know before tune at 10am friday.

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

Hey all you turbo nuts...

As some of you know I got my turbo all installed... A while ago... Had spark issues, but fixd them now...

Well anyways... I have been running about 8 psi on my Greddy kit for a few days now. But I started reading and got ideas of backing off my timing more... I already had it at -3 all across the board, and changed it to none under no boost and then -1.5 per psi (about)

So at 8 psi i'm at -12 timing...

Should I run this much? I know it kills HP a bit... Or should I just run like -2 across the board? When in boost of corse.

As you can tell I dont know much about timing yet...

I'll have some dyno #'s when I get back... (with mods listed)

Thanks in advance!

ive heard about .5 degrees per psi of boost. what are you using to retard timing? just turning back base timing or do you have something like a msd?

i've always heard and have been going by .5 per psi. so you SHOULD be backing off 4 degrees at 8psi. people are getting away with less but why risk it? i've been running base timing at 16ish degrees with no problems that i know of

thanks guys... i thought i might have had to much off...

btw I am using the E-manage and the E-01 to do the little tuning... It retards timing based on air flow volts and RPM's...

Again thanks!

I ran stock timing when I used an FMU. With the E-Manage, I backed off about 3 degrees at the highest airflow voltages and gradually decreased retard at lower airflow and RPM's. The only reason I think I needed to do this is becuase the ECU is now being fooled by the E-Manage. The ECU thinks it is getting less air than it actually is so it thinks the motor is under less overall load so it runs more timing advance. I had some light detonation otherwise. I'm only running 6.5 psi, so you may need a couple degrees retard more than I do.

how do you retard it? from the TDC (0 degrees)?? or from the 20 degrees BTDC (NA KA stock timing)??

I'm pretty sure the emanage (as it is a piggyback) will retard timing from the base distributor timing... 20° BTDC in stock form.

I put it at -5 under when my airflow hits 3.7 volts

I'm not to happy with my engine... Its weak still...

But its a vast gain over my stock power

Once I figger out how... I'll get the #'s up in a new thred.
