So i am looking at a sr red top. Has been sitting since November unused and for all i know uncovered. Before that it was on a pallet for a unknown amount of time and possibly left open, in a garage. Transmission has been sitting out in the open since November and the person hasn't tested the turbo for shaft play. No wiring/ecu. I was thinking the low hundreds, considering the seller doesnt know anything about it and i most likely will need to rebuild it.

go low and see what he says - 250 / 300

remove the valve cover and look inside. take off the turbo and spin it.

if you open it, and that stuff is in order, the price goes up. make an offer first.

the transmission is probably fine. and the turbo wil get upgraded eventually. the head and pistons do matter. compression test it.

if you buy this motor expect to spend even more money doing it right.

Forgive me for being a noob. Since the engine is just sitting, in order to do a compression test i just have to jump the starter right? Is there any problem with doing all that when the engine isn't grounded out? Sorry if this is a dumb question i did some searching but didnt find a clear answer.

its not a dumb question. honestly i get annoyed when i ask simple questions and on one answers. its a good thing to want to learn.

a compression test is done by using a air compressor and a hose, you pump air into each cylinder through the spark plug hole. and seal around it, so it doesnt get out. ( there is a special tool for this i believe )

then use a gauge to check the PSI in each cylinder.

it should be nearly identical for all 4 cylinders.

basically you force air into each cylinder, and see if it holds the air without loosing pressure.

thats a vague description but thats how it works.search and you'll probably find threads that explain this with pics.

I think you are referring to a cylinder leakage test which is just as good. Get the piston on which ever cylinder you're testing at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke. You need to make sure that the transmission is in gear or hold the crank pulley secure with a wrench because when you hook up the air to it sometimes it will blow the piston down. If the leakage test is low then you should have good compression.

i would poura teaspoon of oil into each of the cylinders thoug the spark plug holes and let it sit for 20 mins before doing any kinda of compression test

So i looked up a compression test is a leakage test pretty much the same thing? The things missing to make this a complete swap are as follows- Power steering and A/C (i need a/c it gets hot in summer), Clutch/pressure plate, shifter linkage, ecu/wiring. I dont mind it missing all that long as i dont overpay.

Well a compression test just tells how much air that cylinder is compressing. A leakage test tells how much blow by past the rings you are getting. So odds are if you have low blow by or leakage then you should have good compression.
