You don't have to sand between ever coat. You can strip, Prime, block sand to get everything straight, shoot the base, then clear and you'll be fine. Unless your going to be waiting like 24 hours between base coats then you would more than likely have to sand between coats. The directions on the paint should state how long you have before you have to sand it.

How much do you think it will cost for a paint shop to strip the paint? Also how many coats of prime, base and clearcoat? Thanks

Strip the old paint yourself. Go to a hardware store and buy some paint and varnish striper. Dad's Easy Stripper or something like that is real easy to use and its cheap, I think a 2 liter can was like $10, which should be plenty for just the hatch. Just read the directions and don't get any on your skin cause it burns like a mofo.:)

The number of coats depends on how heavy you spray it.

Be sure to take your time if you are painting it. Don't rush. Expecially with the prep work (sanding, fixing dents/chips, and masking stuff).

Are you changing color?

I am also very much interested in painting my car. Within a month or so I plan to do a s13-s15 conversion and im trying to do this as cost effectively as possible. Where would I go to learn more about painting my car? Should I even try to do a paintjob with pearls etc? I dont realy have the cash to make an expensive mistake if I mess up.thanks for any helpRide

new painters: dont get involved if you can't afford to make mistakes. paint can cost an arm and a leg, and prep materials and chemicals are NOT CHEAP. when i was a teenager, trying to paint my old chevy took every penny i had. don't be fooled by TV when they show a guy mix up paint in an instant, then show a quick clip of him applying the paint and TADA!! DONE!for beginners, it doesn't work that way. If you really want to learn the proper techniques, there's probably several trade schools near you that hold auto body repair classes. that would be the best place to learn. doing a real paintjob takes alot of money and a helluva lot of patience, especially if you're a newbie painter. There is no *cost effective* way to learn from scratch how to properly paint an automobile.

I agree with SmithSR. Unless you've had some experience, you will probably make mistakes and this can get costly. It might just be worth it to sand the car and let someone else paint it, but ask before you start sanding.

Also, If you are going to change colors, you want to spray a coat or 2 of sealer. This is so none of the original color shows in your new color.

Oh boy....32oz is not enough thats for sure.. I used to work as a painters helper for Wilson Co. Motors here in Tn and my dad was a painter for 20 something years so I know a little about this subject.. First thing you want to do is remove as many items from the car as possible, tail lamps, side markers headlights winshield washer squirters door handles as much as you can get off. Then sand everything with 120 grit sandpaper, things like rock chips and any slight dimples or dents will need to be filled in with bondo. after letting that dry for about 6 hours Tape off all the windows inside the open holes from where you took off stuff like the taillamps and other things alsomake sure you backtape along the underside of the hood so no overspray gets into the engine bay and primer everything (I would use PPG or DuPont) then they make a thing called guide coat (its like black baby powder) or flat black spray can will work and lightly spray over the primer. Now you want to block the car using about a 14 inch long sanding block and 120 grit sand paper starting lightly to remove the black powder, and s you sand youl see what places are higher as the black sands off of those spots first. then after you've done the whole car if there where any really bad dips or pings still re-bondo and re-primer block those places and wipe the car down with a cleaning solution like DuPont Final Klean 3901s. Now if I were you I would take it somewhere at this point and get some one else to spray it as todays paints are very difficult to use outside of a bodyshop or paintshop setting.

ive been thinking of trying to paint my car also for the past month or so just for the experience of trying it im really interested in body work and painting and think it would be a good experiment. I thought it was a good idea to strip it yourself and prime it and bondo dings and such and then just bring it to get it painted somewhere else. I should start next week but keep posting how yours is going when i start ill let you know how mine is too. does anyone know of any websites on painting techniques or any other information? i know there out there i had one on my favorites like a year ago with alot of good information but i lost it.

thanks,dennis
