I changed my oil for the first time on my 240 a while back. Now its that time again, but I was wondering... How much oil do you put in your cars? When I changed mine last I replaced the filter (like always) and started with 4 quarts, checked it, and it was OVER. How much should I put in?

3.75 quarts for sure will fill it.

but some say 4 quarts with filter, i mean .25 doesnt really matter, but 3.75 i saw in my service manual with the filter included.

make sure to pure some oil into filter(fill half) before you install it and run your oily finger onto the circular rubber once.

the correct amount with filter is 3.75, but I always put 4 in anyways. that little doesnt make a huge difference but some people care........

Sure .25 qts probably won't matter too much, but what year manual are you looking at?

Thanks guys. And I think I figured out why I was so over. Lets just say I jacked up my car on the passenger side, and didn't level it out and let all the oil drain out of the pan (location of drain plug). I figure there was some left in the pan when I added the 4 quarts. What's the harm in running with more oil anyways?

Something about the oil getting really frothy and not lubricating well because the crank starts whipping it.

oh my god, i feel like a fukng idiot. all these years i've been using 3.75 instead of 4 quarts.

heard it from pep boys, that it is 3.75, so didn't bother to check the manual properly. its w/out the filter change. heh.

i can't believe my 240 was hungry for oil all these years.

SO ITS 4 QUARTS, HERES THE PROOF ONCE AGAIN.

Heillll nooooo! unless its really in a bad condition, aka leaking.

i think 240's got copper on there, so no need to replace it.

Most people don't and don't have problems. But the washers are crush washers to ensure a good seal. They can only crush 1x really. After that they're essenitially just flat washers.

I don't know which one is better, but they're both good filters. There are independent studies out there if you google for them, but they don't usually test factory filters, just aftermarket ones. I've read the most important thing is to change the oil/filter every 3 months and use a quality oil. Fred (palmerwmd) is the oil expert here.
