how much oil?

i know this is a stupid a$$ question, but how many qts of oil goes in a red top SR20? i heard 3, 3.5, 4.5. I put in 4.2 but it seems pretty high on the stick. about 4mm above the high line on the stick.thanks

stock capacity is 3.5 quarts
